OXI Day - October 28th - National Holiday

Ohi Day [pronounced O-he]
Επέτειος του 'Οχι -
Anniversary of the "No"
is celebrated throughout
Greece, Cyprus and the Greek Diaspora
throughout the world on October 28th
and is Greece's second National Day.
The day is celebrated to commemorate
Greece's then Prime Minister,
Ioannis Metaxas' rejection of an
ultimatum made to Greece by Italian
dictator Mussolini to allow the the
Axis forces to enter Greek soil
and to make use of strategic locations
that were not to be specified.
Mussolini's demands were answered
with a single laconic word "OXI"
....in other words "NO" !
Today, every village, town and city
throughout Greece, Cyprus and the
Greek Diaspora are decorated with
Hellenic symbols whether they be
flags or coats of arms and have both
student and military parades.
